How collaborative workshops are solving Limassol’s cooling challenges

Limassol Municipality | 2024

Brief

The Limassol City Cooling Challenge (LC3) was a five-week initiative designed to bring together Built Environment Professionals to address the pressing cooling challenges faced by Limassol. Through a series of carefully crafted workshops, we collaborated to understand the problem, align on solutions, and create a roadmap for change.
Our approach was simple: facilitate meaningful conversations, inspire creativity, and ensure every participant left with tangible, actionable outcomes.

Workshop design

At Simlead, workshop design is at the heart of what we do. For the LC3 project, we crafted each workshop with a clear purpose, ensuring participants were fully engaged, empowered, and equipped to drive meaningful outcomes.

1. Framing the challenge

We started by defining the problem. Participants worked together to identify key constraints, opportunities, and challenges, setting a strong foundation for the weeks ahead.

2. Building Empathy

Using tools like Empathy Maps, we explored the needs, perceptions, and priorities of all stakeholders. This helped create a shared understanding and highlighted key focus areas.

3. Aligning for Success

To ensure a unified vision, we aligned on long-term goals using strategic frameworks like "In 5 Years from Now." Teams collaborated to define clear objectives and outline initial project ideas.

4. Ideation and Innovation

With alignment in place, participants engaged in brainstorming sessions to generate solutions. By the end of this workshop, two key projects were selected for further development:
- Public Transport: Designing a safe, efficient, and user-friendly system to rival private vehicles and reduce reliance on cars.
- Building Retrofitting: Identifying retrofit solutions, such as passive cooling systems and renewable energy integration, supported by legislative incentives.

5. Crafting the Roadmap

The final workshop focused on turning ideas into action. Participants co-created a detailed five-year roadmap with actionable steps, clearly defining roles and responsibilities to ensure implementation success.
